Dennis C. DeVorchik, 73, of 287 Raspberry Rd., Leola, formerly of Alden, NY lost his long, courageous battle with cancer on October 30, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was the loving husband of Judith A. Gerritz DeVorchik. They celebrated 50 years of marriage on Aug. 14th. Born in Buffalo, NY, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary Kinnel DeVorchik.
A 1959 graduate of McKinley H.S. Buffalo, Dennis proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1965 as a Petty Officer 3rdClass stationed in FIC PAC Ford Island, Hawaii as an Aerial Photography Interpreter. A resident of Alden, NY for 27 years, he worked for NYSEG, Lancaster, NY in many capacities retiring in 1996. He and his wife then moved to Leola where they found much peace. He enjoyed his relationship with many Amish and Mennonite friends as a driver and a worker.
His memberships included: VFW #7967 Alden; American Legion Post #0662, New Holland; Knights of Columbus, 3rddegree member #12532. A man of faith, he was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Lancaster; the St. John Neumann Singers, and the Mentor program for Engaged Couples.
Dennis loved the great outdoors, and was an avid deer hunter with his best friend and uncle, the late Jim Kinnel from Johnstown, PA. He loved gardening, his cars, his dogs (Ginger, Frisky, Scooter and Copper), traveling, cruising and trips to Texas. But his greatest joy was taking Judy to Hawaii in 2010 to share his Pearl Harbor experiences when in the Navy 50 years before.
In addition to his wife, he will be lovingly missed by: son, Todd P. married to Julie DeVorchik, Sloan, NY; daughter, Tracey R. married to Keith Ragland, Lancaster, PA; grandchildren, Kayleigh and Lindsey Ragland, Katie and Amelia DeVorchik; sister, Marlene Becker, Buffalo, NY.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the "Green Team" of Hospice and Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604 for the excellent, compassionate care given to Dennis for the past nine months. The family kindly requests memorial contributions to Hospice.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd., Lancaster. Viewing: Monday, 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. at Furman Home for Funerals, 59 W. Main St., Leola and 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Interment: Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
