Ida Lou (Herr) Gregg, 87, of Lancaster, PA, passed peacefully in her sleep on May 28, 2025, at Trillium Place, formerly the Mennonite Home.
Born in Strasburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Rhoads) Herr. Ida Lou graduated from McCaskey High School and Millersville State Teachers College (now Millersville University). She spent many years shaping young lives as a beloved kindergarten teacher at Leola Elementary School and later served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Leola Library.
Ida Lou was a devoted wife, mother, Nanny, and friend. She had a bright sense of humor, a deep love for people, and a gift for making others feel seen and valued. She enjoyed playing Pinochle, reading books—especially to children—and spending time with her growing family. She had a deep love for Strasburg history and genealogy and was known for her incredible knowledge of local landmarks and family roots. One granddaughter affectionately called her “the best tour guide in Lancaster County,” especially around Strasburg and Georgetown.
She was a charter member of Wheatland Presbyterian Church on Columbia Avenue in Lancaster. Her faith in the Lord was paramount in her life, and she lived it out with quiet strength, humility, and grace.
With many health challenges over the years, Ida Lou was grateful for the gift of time. She often marveled that she had lived long enough to meet her ten grandchildren and enjoy her five great-grandchildren as well.
She will be lovingly missed by: one son, Scott, married to Christie (Latschar) Gregg, Beaver Falls; and three daughters, Beth, married to Craig Rudy, East Petersburg; Pattie, married to Douglas Mahoney, Conestoga; and Julie, married to Daniel Garner, Greensboro, NC. Ten grandchildren: Abbigail (Adam) Stauber; Karena (Timothy) Johnson; Jeremiah (Lucy) Gregg; Marianna (Stephen) Dennis; Jonathan (Caitlin) Rudy; Nicholas (Laura) Rudy; Michael (Ashley) Mahoney; Matthew Mahoney; Jude Garner; and Kathryn Garner. Five great-grandchildren: Sidney Stauber, Lanner Johnson, Harlan Johnson, Reese Mahoney, and Luke Rudy.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gerald “Jerry” M. Gregg, who died in 2005; two sisters, Francis (Herr) Caldwell and Geraldine (Herr) Rapp; a brother, David Herr; and a stillborn great-granddaughter, Jaelle Stauber.
A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Wheatland Presbyterian Church, 1125 Columbia Ave, Lancaster, PA. Greeting time with the family will begin at 9 a.m. Private Interment: Conestoga Memorial Park. Contributions are welcome to the benevolent fund at Tandem Living, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:2-4
