It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary Ethel Haldeman, age 100, who transitioned to her heavenly home on September 18, 2025. She died quietly at her residence surrounded by her family. Mary was born to Martin and Sarah Shearer on February 5, 1925 and lived a remarkable life filled with compassion, love, and service.

Mary graduated from Donegal High School and began her career as a Bank Teller. After meeting and marrying David G. Haldeman in 1950, the couple bought a property in Bird-in-Hand where together they developed a business, “Haldeman’s Garage,” located on the corner of Rt 340 and Beechdale Road in Bird-in-Hand. Mary loved working with her husband of 67 years and she enjoyed raising her three children.

Mary is survived by two of her children Edward Haldeman (Janice), Sara Haldeman Scarr (Bill). Mary has four grandchildren (Shane, Jason, Jennifer and Ashley) and four great grandchildren (Hailey, Nathaniel, Oliver, and Winifred) that are the love of her life. She is also survived by her sister, Esther Yeagley, of Elizabethtown. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, David, her sisters Ruth Smeltz and Dorothy Walters, and daughter Sandra Louise Haldeman.

Mary was passionate about her faith. She attended Conestoga Church of the Brethren in Leola where she served as a lifelong Deacon and in many other capacities. She was committed to serving her Lord through volunteer positions such as the Red Cross at the Osteopathic Hospital and The Heart of Lancaster in Lititz. She served the Bird-in-Hand community as a dedicated member of the Hand-in-Hand Fire Company Auxiliary.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Brethren Village Chapel on November 15th at 11:00 am. The family will visit with friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Brethren Village or the Hand-in-Hand Fire Company.
