Robert B. Good, Jr., 86, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, innovation, and service to his family, community, and the broadcasting industry. He was born in Leola to the late Robert B. & Lois E. Good, Sr.
Bob was the beloved husband of Joy Good (Lancaster), whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage with, and devoted father of Jennifer Good (Mountville). He was a proud Lancaster County resident whose professional career spanned decades and whose contributions helped shape television broadcasting throughout central Pennsylvania.
Bob began his broadcasting career at WLYH-TV before dedicating much of his professional life to WGAL-TV, where he rose to become Assistant General Manager, Director of Operations, and Chief Engineer. During his remarkable 32-year tenure, he earned the respect of colleagues across the industry for his technical expertise, leadership, and commitment to excellence. His work guided WGAL through major advancements in television technology and broadcasting, helping the station maintain its reputation as one of the region’s most trusted sources of news and information.
As a recognized leader in broadcasting engineering, Bob’s expertise extended well beyond Lancaster. In 2011, he was invited to testify before the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, where he represented Hearst Television and spoke on critical issues affecting television broadcasting and public service communications. His testimony reflected his lifelong commitment to ensuring reliable local television service and emergency communications for the communities he served.
Throughout his career, Bob was known not only for his technical knowledge but also for his integrity, mentorship, and dedication to public service. Colleagues knew him as a problem-solver, innovator, and trusted leader whose influence reached far beyond the walls of WGAL. He was a lifelong member of the IEEE, SMPTE, and SBE where he was the Certification Chair for Central Pennsylvania.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob was a lifelong learner whose curiosity and enthusiasm for new experiences never waned. He loved cooking and creating meals to share with family and friends. A passionate historian and railroad enthusiast, Bob spent countless hours learning about steam trains and took great pride in his model railroad. He also enjoyed working on antique automobiles and exploring America’s rich history through travel. Bob particularly loved Colonial Williamsburg and looked forward to visiting during the Christmas season. Known for meticulously planning trips and crafting detailed itineraries, he found great joy in discovering historic places and sharing those experiences with others. One of his proudest achievements was fulfilling a lifelong dream by riding a mule to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back, an adventure that reflected his determination, sense of wonder, and love of life.
Above all, Bob cherished his family. He was a loving husband, father, and friend whose kindness, wisdom, steady presence, and sense of humor touched the lives of all who knew him. The values he embodied and the example he set will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have shared in his life.
Bob is survived by his wife, Joy Good; his daughter, Jennifer Good married to Mark Smith; and many friends, and colleagues who will deeply miss him.
His family takes comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the broadcasting innovations he helped pioneer, and the love he shared with those closest to him.
A memorial service will be held on September 12, 2026 at 11am at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 South Duke St., Lancaster, PA. A time for visitation will occur in the chapel prior to the service from 9:45-10.45. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Colonial Williamsburg or the Alzheimer’s Association.
