     Adam John Brown Jr., 88, of Leola, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2016. Born in Paradise, he was the son of Adam J. and Josephine Stevens Brown. He was the husband of Evelyn E. Beck Brown for the past 65 years.

     Also surviving are: 3 children, Jere and wife Kim, Jim and David Boland, Cindy and husband Tom Thorpe; grandfather to Matt Brown, wife Jenna, Tyler Brown, wife Kaitlin and a great-grandson, Miles Brown; and a brother, Emory Brown, wife Beverly.  He was preceded in death by: brothers, Jay, Ken and Earl Brown; sisters, Mildred Hersh, Elizabeth Reitz, Mary Stoltzfus and Edith Miller.

     He was a science teacher and science department Chairman at Conestoga Valley High School originally starting at East Lampeter High school in 1956 and then moving to Conestoga Valley when it opened in 1958. He was the head of the Conestoga Valley Education Association and an advocate for teachers. He was a 1951 graduate of Millersville State College with a BS in Science and Minor in Geography. He continued his studies at Pennsylvania State University finishing his Masters Degree in Education at Temple University in 1958.  He continued advanced studies toward his doctorate at Franklin and Marshall, Pennsylvania State University, Nebraska Wesleyan, Kansas State College and Knox College. Education was a daily constant thread in his life. Adam especially enjoyed teaching students science and started the Science Department as well as originating the Earth Science Program and coordinated numerous science related field trips. He conducted many Science Fairs at the school and was active in the Lancaster City County Science Fair serving as Director in 1963 and 1981.

     In addition to his full-time work as an educator, he worked part-time at the US Post Office in Soudersburg, PA from 1954 until 1973 as a Clerk and Assistant Postmaster.  

     He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service as an Information Specialist supporting the Korean Communications Zone including contribution to and distribution of the Stars&Stripes. He was an active member of the Ephrata Elks Club, VFW, AMVETS, Mill Creek and Paradise Sportsman Associations.

     Adam was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for 65 years where he served on the Church Council, Building Committee and was a Sunday School teacher and past superintendent. He enjoyed bowling on the Lutheran “A” team.

      He was an avid hunter who was proud of his record 36 turkeys which lended to his patient demeanor. He especially enjoyed the mountain retreat in Bradford County where he was able to spend time with family while hunting and fishing.  His summers included frequent fishing trips to Canada (Lake Calabogie) and New York with his teaching friends.  He enjoyed time with his family, his children, grandchildren and great-grandson.

     Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, PA 17540 on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016 at 2 PM with interment following in Trumbauer Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 PM Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Endowment Fund in memory of Adam J. Brown.
