     Brenda Sue Alger Verghese, 74, of Leola, passed away surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 30, 2024 after an 11-year battle with ovarian cancer.  Born in Broadway, VA, she was the daughter of Ernest L. and Mabel Ruth Mitchell Alger.  She was the wife of the late Thomas Verghese who passed away in 2020.

     After graduating from the Rockingham School of Nursing in Virginia, her and husband Thomas moved to Lancaster, PA. Brenda had a lengthy career in nursing which came to a close when she retired as an instructor for the CNA program at HACC. Brenda’s creativity was highlighted by her scrapbooking and photography.  She especially enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends, most notably her beloved grandsons. She was a member of Forest Hills Mennonite Church in Leola where Tom and her worshipped and gained many life-long friends. She always had an amazing attitude and lived life to the fullest even in the midst of her diagnosis.

     She will be lovingly missed by: her children, Samuel Alger Verghese (partner of Audra Sehenuk), and Sheila Mary Verghese; grandchildren, Anthony Alan Taylor and Isaiah Drexel Taylor; brothers, Jerry Franklin (Deborah Crawford) Alger, Bob Leroy (Dorothy Dawson) Alger, Joseph Allen (Dorothy Baker) Alger; sisters, Linda (late David) Schmidt, Martha (Ray) Burkholder.  She was preceded in death by her brother, James Ernest Alger.

     Funeral services will be held from Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Rd., Leola, on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 11 am with interment following in Bareville Cemetery. The viewing will be on Friday from 6 to 8 pm, and Saturday from 10 to 11 am, all at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bridge of Hope, P.O. Box 304 Exton, PA 19341.
