On Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at 6:51 a.m., Carol Ann Haworth Lownes, of East Earl, PA, surrounded by her loving daughters entered her eternal home. She was 85 years old. Carol was born in Lansdowne, PA. Her family lived in Ocean City, NJ, for a short time when she was young, and in several of the small towns outside Philadelphia. Carol was a 1951 graduate of Springfield High School. There she was senior class secretary, piano accompanist for the school choir, played drums in the marching band, and performed in the school play. Carol attended the University of Delaware and Drexel University where she was on the rifle and archery teams and pursued her interest in nutrition. In 1953 she married her sweetheart, Don Lownes, whom she’d loved since the age of 14. Carol and Don settled in West Chester, PA, where they lived and worked until relocating to East Earl, PA, in 2000. Carol moved to Pocopson Home in Pocopson, PA, in March 2018. Don, her beloved husband of almost 65 years, died in June 2018.
Carol loved music and dancing. From 1951-1963, Don and Carol managed a dance band called The Sentimentalists. Carol was the band’s vocalist. She also worked for several years in the office at Bell Telephone. In 1954 Don and Carol established Lownes Nursery and Landscape Design, and Carol managed the office while raising their three daughters. Carol had loved Girl Scouting as a young woman, and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader for her daughters. For many years Carol could also be found backstage at performances pinning costumes and fixing hair for Harrison’s. She worked as an aide at Bethlehem Methodist Nursery School in Thornton, PA, and later was the secretary in the Bethlehem Methodist church office. Carol cared for a menagerie of farm animals at home and was an avid gardener, seamstress and homestyle cook, offering hospitality to friends and strangers for many years. In retirement Carol organized annual high school reunions all over the east coast for her Springfield High School classmates. She looked forward each year to working at the polls and recruited others to join her. Carol also organized neighborhood picnics and annual events for her extended family. She certainly had the gift of hospitality. Friends and family were of the utmost importance to her. Carol’s pride and joy were her eight grandchildren. She was a wonderful grandmother, holding “Grammee Camp” in the summer and attending dozens of school events. Her favorite place on earth was Ocean City, NJ, where she continued to bodysurf and build sand castles well into her 70’s.
Carol was the daughter of the late Maurice and Eleanor (Mollan) Haworth and is survived by three daughters, Bette (married to George) Ferris, Linda (married to Greg) Hytha, and Donna (married to Paul) Brady. She is survived by eight grandchildren who dearly loved their Grammee: Mark Ferris (married to Alexandria), Robert Hytha (married to Katharine), Alexander Hytha, Carrie Hytha (married to Noah) Morgan, Christopher Hytha, Daniel Brady, Brian Brady and Steven Brady. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Nancy Lee Baird.
A Celebration of Carol’s life will be held April 28, 2019 at 2 pm at the Church of the Loving Shepherd, 1066 S. New Street, West Chester, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Young Life organization or the Alzheimer’s Association.
