Charles E. Johnson, 102, formerly of Rockland, passed away Monday, July 9, 2018 at Maple Farm Nursing Center in Akron, PA. Born in Sidnaw, he was the son of the late Cecil and Donna Powell Johnson. He was married for 67 years to the late Irene (Kaiser) Johnson who died in 2004.
After graduating high school, Charles worked a year for the Civilian Conservation Corp, a public works project started by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He then worked his entire career for the now Upper Peninsula Power Company, retiring after 43 years. He was an active member of the Assembly of God Church in Ontonagon. An avid teacher of the Bible, he spoke at many of the churches in Upper Michigan. Along with his wife, Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing, and collecting rocks, minerals and old bottles.
He is survived by: a son, James, husband of Margie Johnson, Leola, PA; two grandchildren, Mark, husband of Christa Johnson, Elizabethtown, PA, Michelle, wife of Jeffrey L. Beiler, Akron, PA; 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four siblings.
A memorial service will be held from the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Rockland, MI on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 2 PM. The family will visit with friends from 1 to 2 PM at the church. Private interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Upward Call Counseling Services, 2394 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.
