David G. Haldeman “Dave” went home to be with the Lord on March 22, 2017 in the Courtyards of Brethren Village. He and his wife of 66 years, Mary E. Shearer Haldeman, lived in the Brethren Village Town House for 16 years. Born in Rapho Twp., the son of the late John B. and Annie Haldeman, Dave had three children: S. Edward Haldeman (Janice), Sara Haldeman Scarr (Bill) and Sandra Haldeman; four grandchildren, Shane Haldeman (Gloria), Jason Haldeman (Ashley), Jennifer Keeney Scarr (Jonathan Brumbaugh) and Ashley Scarr; two great-grandchildren: Hailey Haldeman and Nathaniel Haldeman. He had 12 brothers and sisters: John Henry, Phares, Grace, Anna, Dan, Martha, Thelma, Robert, Marlin, Rufus, Glenn and Joyce.

With an 8th grade education, Dave launched into the world with a passion for serving others as demonstrated in his involvement in many organizations.  Dave’s life mission was service above self, following in the footsteps of Jesus. He served his Lord in various ways: a member of the Conestoga Church of the Brethren; Sunday school teacher; Deacon and the Administrative Board member; choir member. His pacifistic beliefs were demonstrated in his participation in Heifer Project’s Sea Going Cowboy program around 1946.

An independent business man in Bird-In-Hand, PA for 33 years, he and his gas station served the community in many ways: small engine repair, car maintenance, lawn mowers, gas, and a place for the community to gather, play games and care for each other. His time serving the community included: member and past 20 year Chief of Bird-in-Hand Fire Company; fire marshal for 2 years; 58 year perfect attendance member of Paradise Rotary Club; Board member Farmer’s First Bank; charter member of the East Lampeter Park; and volunteer for Boy Scouts until he was 94. At Brethren Village, he loved working in the woodshop he helped start; was part of the Green Thumb;  and served as Town House Coffee hour host.

Greeting time with the family and viewing will be at the Brethren Village Chapel on Friday evening, Mar. 24, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 141 E. Main St., Leola on Sunday, Mar. 26, 2017 at 3 pm.  Private Burial: Chiques Church of the Brethren Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Brethren Village Good Samaritan Fund, PO Box 5093, Lanc., PA 17606. May we all follow in the footsteps of this man who put service above self!
