10/25/2014

Edna E. Hackenberger, 94, of Lancaster, passed peacefully at 9:15 pm, Saturday, October 25 at Lancaster General Hospital with her son and granddaughters by her side.  Born in 1920 in New Holland, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Sensenig Zimmerman and Anna Mae Eby Zimmerman.  In 1921, the family moved into an old stone home along Route 30 in Paradise where Edna spent most of her growing up years.  She greatly treasured the memory of her childhood years there before moving to Lancaster.  The home would later become known as Revere Tavern, and she enjoyed celebrating her birthday there each year.  Edna enjoyed friends and extended family gatherings, as well as dining out, and vacationing with her family in Avalon, NJ each summer.

She attended Gordonville primary school, Paradise Junior High, and East Lampeter High School where she was a cheerleader and performed in school operettas.  She graduated from East Lampeter with distinction in 1938.  She was the wife of local home builder Roy D. Hackenberger, Jr., whom she married on November 20, 1941 at Valley Forge Chapel.  During World War II, they lived in Leesville, LA while Roy was stationed at Camp Polk.  During this time Edna worked in the Camp Polk post exchange office.

Returning to Lancaster County after the war, she became a home-maker.  In the 1970’s she became a tour guide for Keystone tours for over 25 years.  She also earned a real estate license in 1979.

A member of Grace United Church of Christ, Lancaster, she sang in the choir for over 25 years and was active in the annual fall church bazaar.

She is survived by a son, Jeffrey K. Hackenberger of Leola, three granddaughters, Janine Wheeler, Leola; Laura Hackenberger, Lancaster; and Colleen Gibler of Seattle, WA.  She was also known affectionately as “GG" to her great-granddaughters Abigail and Hannah Wheeler.  She was pre-deceased by her son Timothy Hackenberger in 1987, husband Roy in 1997, and was the last of her immediate family.

The funeral will be on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Grace UCC, 1947 New Holland Pike, Lancaster.  There will be no public viewing; however, the family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m. Interment: Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery.
