Elvin W. Burkhart, 81, from Bird-In-Hand, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Sept. 4 at his home on Monterey Rd. after a short battle with Leukemia.  He was the loving husband of Harriet F. Carpenter Burkhart.  They were married 56 years in August. Born in Strasburg, he was the son of the late John and Laura Weaver Burkhart.

Elvin spent 27 years as a welder with CNH, and worked part-time for 10 years as a delivery truck driver for Bird-In-Hand Bakery. He was a well-known musician in the area, having played banjo for Stone Mountain Bluegrass, the Golden Valley Boys, Summit Hill Bluegrass and Horst Brothers.

He was a member of Stumptown Mennonite Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. In addition to music, Elvin had a great passion for hunting and the outdoors, and he was a member of a hunting camp in Milroy, Pa.

In addition to his wife, he will be lovingly missed by: sons, Larry married to Dawn McGallicher Burkhart, Kinzers, Herb married to Rose Weaver Burkhart, Bird-In-Hand, Glenn married to Sherri Hershey Burkhart, Stevens; grandchildren, Anthony Burkhart, Kiersie (Andreas) Scherzer, Jenna (Andrew) Butler, Courtney (Joe) Zimmerman, Ethan (Whitney) Burkhart, Jed (Anna) Burkhart, Preston (Brooke) Burkhart; great-grandchildren, Shawn, Esme, Lily; siblings, Mary wife of the late Loren Landis, Gordonville, Walter of Marticville, Millie wife of Lester Witwer, Lancaster, Lois wife of Clair Miller, Williamsport, MD, Wilmer married to Ginny Shaub Burkhart, Lititz, Kathy wife of Donald Fellenbaum, Mount Joy. His sister, Elma Kopp and his brothers, J. Richard and Merle Burkhart preceded him in death.

The funeral will be Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Rd., Bird-In-Hand with interment in the adjoining cemetery.  Viewings: Monday, 6-9 p.m. at Furman Home for Funerals, 59 W. Main St., Leola and Tuesday, 10-11 a.m. at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are welcomed to: Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Central PA Chapter.
