Ethel McClure Witmer Tucker, 90, passed away Friday, August 19, 2016 at Ephrata Manor. Born in Bart Twp., she was the daughter of John and Olive Homsher McClure. She was the wife of the late Lawrence C. Witmer who died in 1983, and of the late Raymond A. Tucker who died in 2009.
Ethel’s teaching career spanned from 1946 in Quarryville, until her retirement in 1988 from Smoketown Elementary School. During that time, she earned her Master’s in Education and Reading Specialist Certificate from Millersville State College; participated in the Project Head Start in 1967; was named Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America by her Principal in 1973; and had several works of poetry and children’s books published. She was a member of PSEA and NEA.
She was a member of Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, and was a member the Four Seasons and Overlook Ladies Nine Hole Golf Clubs. She loved dancing, swimming, writing, painting, and the beach. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and the Republican National Committee.
She is survived by her son, Lawrence C. Witmer, Jr., Lititz, and five nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held from the Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, 2555 Horseshoe Rd., Lancaster, on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016 at 6 PM. The family will visit with friends from 5 to 6 PM at the church.
