Helen Burkhart Peachey, 101, of Fairmount Homes, formerly of Greenville, SC and Akron, PA went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, January 5, 2013. She was the wife of the late Chester J. Peachey who died in 1960. Mrs. Peachey was the last of nine children of John and Hettie (Myer) Burkhart. She lived in the Farmersville and Bareville area during her youth, and remembered when her father was one of the first to purchase an automobile. After the death of her daughter, H. Sharlene Peachey in 1962, Helen worked in the cafeteria at Ephrata High School for a number of years. Later she worked in the bake shop at Hollinger’s Farm Market and was a bus person at three different restaurants, Oregon Dairy, Leola Family Restaurant and Yoder’s. Her last position was at Fairmount Homes as a receptionist, retiring in the Spring of 1988 at age 87. Her favorite activities were doing word searches and crossword puzzles. Mrs. Peachey was a member of the Akron Mennonite Church. On Thursday, November 10, 2011 an article appeared in Lancaster Newspapers regarding her 100th birthday. In the article Mrs. Peachey commented on her longevity: “I’ve tried to live right.” “That’s all I can say.” Helen is survived by: two sons – Dale L. husband of Terry Peachey of Ephrata, Kenneth E. husband of Lore Peachey of Tacoma, WA; four granddaughters – Cynthia wife of John Evans of Reading, PA, Sherry wife of Gary Nienaber of Landenberg, PA, Opal Peachey of Seattle, WA, Nora Peachey of Dresden, Germany; six great-grandchildren – Andrew John (AJ) Evans, Joel Evans both of Reading, PA, Garret Nienaber, Taylor Nienaber, Madison Nienaber, Collin Nienaber all of Landenberg, PA. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Alta Oberholtzer, Leah Burkhart, Clara Wenger, David Burkhart, Esther Hershey, Jacob “Harlan” Burkhart, Roy Burkhart, Frances “Elizabeth” Wissler. The memorial service will be held on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Akron Mennonite Church, 1311 Diamond Street, Akron, PA 17501. Viewing: Friday, January 11, 2013 from 10-11 a.m. at the church. Interment: Groffdale (Brick) Mennonite Cemetery, Leola.
