Herbert C. “Bud” Mearig, 99, of Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016. Born in Leacock, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Newton and Viola Grace Weaver Mearig. Mr. Mearig was the loving husband of Doris Klopp Mearig who died in 2011, and was a loving and devoted father to their son Herbie who died in 2009.
Mr. Mearig graduated from the former Upper Leacock High School and Franklin&Marshall College. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Navy during WWII; trained at Princeton and Ohio State; served on the USS St. Louis; U.S. Naval Reserves, Ret.
During college, he published the “WEEKLY REVIEW” for the community of Leacock. His first job out of college was at LB Herr, Business Machines. In 1963 he formed the Bud Mearig Company: Office Equipment and Business Machines. He held various positions including: President, Lancaster Automobile Club; Chairman of the Pennsylvania AAA Federation; retired from Bud Mearig Enterprises; was a business consultant; member of Lancaster Chapter of Sales and Marketing Executives International; National Director: American Business Club (AMBUCS); National Speaker for AMBUCS.
Mr. Mearig was involved with the local community. In 1980 he ran for the Congressional Seat of Edwin Eshleman. He was a director at Commonwealth Bank; member of the Lancaster Water Authority; Marshall for the Lancaster Loyalty Day Parade; Founder and Board Member of the Child Development Center; F&M Alumni: Blue and White Singers; college and high school basketball official for 30 years; was a much sought after speaker for local events; and enjoyed being the emcee for the Lancaster Community Band events.
His memberships included: Hamilton Club; Lancaster Country Club; Pirates Club; Tucquan Club; Honorary member of the Groundhog Lodge; Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster where he served on the Church Vestry.
In 2011, the Red Rose Honor Guard honored Captain Mearig with a full, flag changing ceremony at his home. Mr. Mearig had flown the American flag at his home for more than 60 years. When it recently needed replaced, the Honor Guard was there to do the job.
He is survived by: a nephew, Robert R. married to Dorothy Cooper, Millersville; nieces, Joan Murray, Brownstown, Rolene Lewis, Lake Junaluska, NC. In addition to his wife and son, he was preceded in death by: sisters, Mildred Cooper Miller, Helen Lincoln; a step-sister, Grace Hornberger; a nephew, James N. Cooper married to Wendy Cooper of Hershey.
Graveside services will be held Friday, May 13, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trumbauer Memorial Cemetery, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. Kindly omit flowers.
