Paul S. Schott, 95, was known to many as a gentleman of manners and patriotism. He passed away on July 9th, 2016 at the Mennonite Home in Lancaster, Pa. His beloved wife, Dorothy, had passed in February of this year. He is survived by his brother in law Eugene Cowan, and nieces Julie Gittings of State College and Donna Fisher of Lancaster, as well as nephews James Cowan and John Cowan of Lancaster. He also had two grandnieces, Leslie Gittings of Madison WI and Hilary Trethewey of Newark, DE. Uncle Paul had a robust sense of humor and could be relied upon to wear Easter Bunny ears or impersonate Santa Claus with an authentic Ho- Ho -Ho!
Paul was born in Springfield, Illinois in 1920, the only son of Alice Listmann Schott and Paul Stanton Schott Sr.
Paul left Illinois as a child and would spend the rest of his life residing in Pennsylvania except for his time in the armed services. During WWII Paul served in both the Navy and the Army Air Corps.
After WWII, the young returning veteran used the GI Bill to further his own education. Paul graduated in engineering from Franklin and Marshall College and soon after obtained his public teaching credentials from Millersville College. He later earned a Master of Education advanced degree from Temple University. He was a valued teacher in the Lancaster School District for well over 30 years where his unique talents and devotion turned 6th grade teaching into an art form. He incorporated technology, math, and engineering concepts into many of his hands-on lessons. Though he was often assigned to teach the more resistant students, Mr. Schott’s projects brought out the best in nearly every pupil. Students also learned manners, respect and etiquette, as Mr. Schott enforced his premise of the Golden Rule – that everyone should treat others as he or she wants to be treated.
After retirement, Paul and Dottie devoted more time to travel and dancing. They were avid, accomplished ballroom dancers and they were a well turned out couple in every way. Their active retirement at Valleybrook Estates also included swimming, tennis and bridge. He and his wife attended the First Church of Christ, Scientist as well as Grace Lutheran Church in Lancaster for many years. Paul was a lifetime member of the B.P.O.E.
The family wishes to thank everyone who has surrounded Paul with tenderness, understanding and care at the Mennonite Home. A memorial service for both Dorothy and Paul Schott will be scheduled at the convenience of the family.
