Samuel S. Smucker

Samuel “Sam" S. Smucker, age 88 of Strasburg, PA, formerly of Rockvale Rd., Lancaster, went home to be with the Lord on September 6, 2016 surrounded by his family.  He was the husband of the late Hannah B. Smucker who predeceased him on December 10, 2011.  He was the son of the late Samuel B. and Rebecca Smucker.  He was a faithful prayer warrior for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He will be lovingly missed by his children, Mary Ann wife of Lloyd Miller, Lancaster, LeRoy husband of Pam Chaffins Smucker, Lancaster, Verna wife of Galen Smoker, Cochranville, Marlin husband of Janet Beiler Smucker, Lancaster, Reba wife of Merle Esh, Lancaster, and a long time fresh air girl, Barbara Scolaro, Rhode Island.  He also has 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Priscilla Stoltzfus, Lancaster, and Rebecca wife of Samuel Esh, Gordonville.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son Nelson who died in June 1975; also three sisters, Mattie Stoltzfus, Mary King and Sadie Stoltzfus; and three brothers, Eli, Dan and John.

Sam founded Sam S. Smucker & Sons, Inc. Exterior Improvements, which began in 1960.  He retired from the family business in 1994 but continued to faithfully mow the lawn, which was his pride and joy.  He was a member of The Worship Center and The Gideon's International South Camp for many years.

Sam loved to travel, especially camping in various places, plus he enjoyed visiting missionaries in other countries and volunteering with MDS.  His hobbies included golf, playing games and gardening. For many years he and his wife spent winters in Sarasota, Florida where he enjoyed countless hours of playing shuffleboard and cards with family and friends.  Since the passing of his wife, he treasured having his sister Priscilla spend time with him during the winter months in Florida.

Sam was very appreciative to his family, caretakers and the Hospice Community for the loving care he received the past ten weeks.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to celebrate his life at The Worship Center, 2384 New Holland Pike, Lancaster on Monday, September 12, 2016 at 1:00 PM.  The viewing will be held at The Worship Center on Sunday, September 11 from 3-5 PM and 6-8 PM.  There will be no viewing before the service.  Interment:  Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery immediately following the service.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Gideon International Inc.
