The Rev. John W. Kammerer, 92, of Brethren Village, Lancaster, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014. He was the loving husband of Mary Book Sheaffer Kammerer. They were married 70 years last June. Born in Hartleton, PA, he was the son of the late Rev. David S. and Abigail Chambers Kammerer.
Pastor Kammerer attended Susquehanna University; and graduated from: Millersville University with a B.S. in Education; Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary with a Masters of Theology degree; The Pennsylvania State University with a Masters of Education degree.
Pastor Kammerer was ordained on May 15, 1946 by the Central Pennsylvania Synod of the United Lutheran Church in America. He served as Pastor of these Lutheran Parishes: Marysville/Duncannon-1946 – 1948; St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Boiling Springs-1948 – 1954; Aaronsburg Lutheran Charge-Centre County-1954 – 1958; St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church-Lancaster-1958 – 1970; Muddy Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church-Denver-1970 – 1983. He served on various committees: 1947 – as Chairman of the Christian Education Committee of the West Penn Conference; 1955-57 – as the Chairman of the Juniata Conference Committee on Home Missions and Rural Church Work; 1955&56 – as an assistant camp director at Camp Juniata; 1959 – as leader of the Gettysburg Assembly (Summer School of the Christian Education); as Secretary-Treasurer of the Lancaster County Lutheran Pastor's Association; 1959-1960 – as member of the Board of Directors of Susquehanna University; 1962-64 – as Chaplain of the Travelers Protection Association – Post D.
He retired from active ministry on June 30, 1983 and most recently was a member of St. Peter's Evan. Lutheran Church, Lancaster.
A 32nd degree Mason, he also enjoyed fishing, gardening and traveling with his wife. He will also be lovingly missed by: his daughters, Catharine wife of the late Brian Keim, Rydal, PA, Margaret wife of Glenn Stigelman, Lititz; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul married to Romaine Kammerer, Largo, FL. He was preceded in death by his brother, David and his sister, Abigail Gouker.
The memorial service will be Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601 preceded by greeting time with the family from 10-11 a.m. Interment in Bareville Cemetery will be private.
